Southeastern Mediterranean region, Southeastern Asia, West India and Central Europe.

Flavor
The leaves smell like beans. The seeds have a grilled bittersweet taste with a light maple-syrup scent.

General benefits
Stimulates the uterus and lactation. Anti-inflammatory, invigorates digestion, diuretic, sedative, aphrodisiac, reduces the carbohydrate and cholesterol rates in the blood.

Ayurvedic properties
Its taste is bitter and astringent. It is hot, dry and light. Suitable for the three Dosas.

Culinary uses
Traditionally Indian curries are spiced with its seeds. The leaves serve to perfume marinate fish.
